you know how much women like make-up, Maybe even some men. But do you know the origins of your precious eyeliner and mascara or how your pancake powders were created. Well today I found a video by Lisa Eldridge with Madeleine Marsh explaing the make-up history from the late Victorian era to the 1930's.

witch hazel cold cream

1/2 c Vaseline

1 tbs jojoba oil

1/4 oz wax 

1 tbs witch hazel extract

Melt fats together, let cool slightly and whip in the witch hazel. Add 2 - 5 drops essential oil for fragrance if desired.

Now how about one of the most famous perfumes of all time. I'm talking about Coco Chanel's perfume, Chanel Number 5. Marilyn Monroe was a famous actress who enjoyed it's famous the sent.

 

Finally one of my favorite beauty products, Pond's cold cream. It keeps my skin baby bottom smooth. it was originally marketed with two creams cold cream and vanishing cream ( Vanishing cream has been discontinued.) The adverts of the early 20th century stated  ‘every normal skin needs these two creams’

The make-up on early film

The make-up on film from 1900 to 1930's was quite different from the make-up on film we see today.
 They shot film on an Orthochromatic film stock. It was quite standard for the time because it was fairly cheap. Due to filming on Orthochromatic film stock it did not filter red and yellow light.
   Then due to the effect of no yellow or red light filters you had to do an affect like this when applying make-up.

how to apply makeup (1940)

1. Cleansing
First remove all stale make-up with cleansing cream . Remove cleansing cream, first with cleansing tissue and then with soap and water.  if you do not remove all traces of the cleansing cream it will cause the face to look greasy. if skin is oily follow removal of cleansing cream with a skin freshener.


2.Powdering.
Inspect make-up carefully before powdering.  Pat powder on  – never rub it on ! Use generously and remove all surplus with a brush. You may use powder that is lighter than your foundation but never one that is darker than your skin tone. Remove all trace of powder from the hairline.


3.Mascara
 drawing the eyelid gently upward while at the same time trying not to let the eye close. This will enable you to apply mascara to the entire lash and prevent flutter. Follow the same procedure in applying mascara to the lower lashes, gently pulling downward. The eye should be kept open.

    

An exclusive 1933 beauty session - with Hollywood screen goddess Jean Harlow

Sadly Ms Harlow died so very young just four years after this feature in 1937. This 1930's make-up session is rare.
  She relies upon good health, fresh air, exercise, cream, soap and water, followed by an ice water rinse, for her perfect milky skin.
Note her lashes – they are naturally long!
  Jean's eyebrows are high, narrow and very arched. Jean has removed all but the fainest wisp of brow hair, over which she pencils in her look each morning.
  She chooses a true red cream rouge for her lips, blending the line perfectly and carrying the color well inside her mouth to prevent a break in tone.
  Those very long lashes are black, her mascara of choice being cake Maybelline, which she applies with a fine set of brushes given to her by Max Factor himself.
  SKIN-TONE powder is then puffed liberally over Jean’s face and neck, with special attention to nostrils,  eye corners and her chin. Taking care to brush from her brows.
   platinum coiffure has probably aroused more comment and excitement than any other woman in today’s Hollywood firmament. A natural blonde in fact, Jean chose to encourage whiteness by weekly shampoos with white soap and a final rinse containing a few drops of French Blue. She brushes for softness, and sets her wave with nothing more than water and vinegar.

2 good face creams (from mothers remedies 1915)

Pure face cream-
Set a bowl in a basin over the fire. In it put a quarter ounce of white wax
and two and a half ounces of spermaceti, and the same quantity of oil of sweet almonds.
When melted and hot add a pinch of borax and an ounce and a half of rose water.
Beat ingredients with a silver fork, briskly till cold. Warm jar before filling and keep in a cool
place.


Another good cream-
One ounce each of white wax and spermaceti, two ounces each of lanoline and coconut oil and
four ounces of sweet almond oil. Melt in a double boiler. stir in two ounces of orange flower oil
and thirty drops of tincture of benzoin. Stir briskly till cold, and the constancy of a thick paste. it can be used after thoroughly washing the face and a good cleansing cream also.
